Testing Potential Drug Treatments to Fight the Progression of Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to progressive cognitive dysfunction and affects increasing numbers of Veterans.

Current knowledge of the processes leading to this terrible disease are still limited, and no effective treatments are available.  Studies from Dr. Wyss-Coray’s laboratory, supported by PAIRE, have shown early successes in manipulating one of the underlying processes contributing to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The laboratory has generated a new drug which can improve learning and memory in context of Alzheimer’s disease in a laboratory setting, which is currently being advanced for first use in humans. While still in the early stages, this ground breaking research offers new opportunities for the fight against this terrible disease.
